About the Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique is a unique form of body re-education.  During lessons I will use both verbal instructions and gentle guidance with my hands so that you learn to be more aware of your own postural habits as you go about your daily activities.  You don't need to undress however loose comfortable clothing is recommended.

Lessons are completely tailored to the invidual and as long as you are able to make your way to me for your lessons then you are fit enough to participate. I have a particular interest in helping people with back pain and neck pain achieve lasting pain relief, however I also teach people who come for a variety of other reasons including:

  • for personal development reasons to enjoy a more conscious way of living with more body awareness;
  • for anxiety and to learn how to experience less stress;
  • for performance improvement if they are singers or musicians;
  • to retain or improve mobility during aging;
  • to improve their appearance by having better posture;
  • to help with RSI

The main principle of the Technique is the belief that the way that we use our bodies will affect how well they function. The Alexander Technique encourages efficient use of the the self so that we minimise tension and strain, develop freedom in the joints and enjoy greater ease of movement, better posture and improved breathing.

You will learn to improve your awareness of how you use your body so that you sit, stand and move more easily. Your joints will become more flexible and you will find that you learn to minimise tension as you go about your daily activities. You will let go of harmful habits that have accumulated through life and you will regain a sense of the joy of movement that you experienced as a child.

The back pain trial conducted in 2008 and published in the BMJ showed that lessons in the Technique reduced the number of days pain experienced by 86%. The New York spinal neurosurgeon Jack Stern stated that 97% of people with back pain could benefit from the Alexander Technique. If you are experiencing back pain, then Alexander lessons are a safe and effective way of gaining lasting pain relief. Lesson are held 5 days a week in Lewes, East Sussex.
